On Monday, November 15, 2016, the Mobile Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, as well as the Mobile Alumni Chapter Guide Right Programs (Kappa Knight and Kappa League), hosted a “Learn to Live” program with the Mobile Police Department. Thanks to Officer Curtis Graves, for representing the MPD.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., "Learn 2 Live" is a collaborative effort with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (Noble) to formally address one of the most critical issues affecting people of color in the United States. Incidents of racial profiling, a lack of comprehensive policies, a lack of trust and legitimacy within the community, and the increasing frequency of tragic outcomes between law enforcement and persons of color have produced an environment of anger and frustration.
The "Learn 2 Live" provided those who attend the following information:
- Increased awareness on law enforcement and community policing
- Factual understanding of legal rights
- Practical strategies and tools to utilize when dealing with police
- Opportinityfor more desirable outcomes when encountering law enforcement officials.
The “Learn to Live” program was lead by Mobile Kappa Leaguer, Johnathan Maize, who serves as the first-vice president. Closing remarks were give by the Polemarch of the Mobile Alumni Chapter, Mr. Frank Rodgers Jr. A special thanks to The Lovely Ladies of Psi for attending the event as well. There were 70 youth who attended the event. A total of 30 pizzas were purchased for the refreshments following the event.
